What is a PAN?

Your PAN is a special 10-digit ID code made up of letters and numbers. The Income Tax Department issues it to individuals and businesses in India. If anyone wants to engage in any financial transaction, having a PAN is mandatory. It could be anything ranging from opening a bank account, investing in the stock market, or filing income tax returns.
