As another fiscal year (FY22) comes to an end, it is time to look back at the top gainers and the losers for the fiscal year. We go by the 365 day returns calculated by the NSE.

Top gainers in Nifty

The Nifty overall gained 18.88% on a YoY basis for FY22, but that is off the point. The real point is that the Nifty made amazing gains despite a number of negative headwinds during the year like heavy FPI selling, the lag effect of COVID-19, sharp spike in inflation, margin pressure across sectors, impact of Ukraine war, Fed hawkishness etc.

Here are the top gainers among the Nifty index.

Company

FY22 gain (%)

BAJAJFINSV

76.45

HINDALCO

74.24

TITAN

62.78

TATASTEEL

61.01

ONGC

60.45

JSWSTEEL

56.40

APOLLOHOSP

55.59

SUNPHARMA

53.02

TECHM

51.24

BHARTIARTL

45.94

Not surprisingly, the list is dominated by commodities like Tata Steel, Hindalco, JSW Steel and ONGC. However, the top gainer was Bajaj Finserv, which saw solid traction across its lending and insurance business. Bharti Airtel gained amidst improving market presence while Sun Pharma emerged as the best pharma play during the year.

Losers in Nifty

Company

FY22 Loss (%)

ULTRACEMCO

-2.01

HDFC

-4.31

DRREDDY

-4.88

EICHERMOT

-5.64

BRITANNIA

-11.55

HINDUNILVR

-15.75

BPCL

-16.03

SHREECEM

-18.44

HEROMOTOCO

-21.26

HDFCLIFE

-22.69

HDFC group has been under a cloud and two of the group companies came under fire. However, in other cases, the losses were largely due to spike in input costs. For example, auto players and cement players were the worst hit by a rise in price of steel, fuel and power costs. In the case of FMCG players like Hindustan Unilever and Britannia, the yearly losses were due to a spike in crude and other input food products.

How about a broader Nifty 200?

One argument against the Nifty is that it is too large cap focused. Hence we also take a counter look at the Nifty 200 index for a much broader perspective on the FY22 performers. The Nifty 200 was up 20% in FY22, but the performers was also a lot more disparate.

Here are some of the major gainers

Company

FY22 Gain (%)

TATAELXSI

228.28

ADANITRANS

160.69

PERSISTENT

147.93

TATAPOWER

131.14

NATIONALUM

125.35

ATGL

123.65

INDHOTEL

115.16

MINDTREE

106.48

ADANIENT

95.39

OIL

94.14

That is the advantage of a more broad-based index. You get to see more stock specific plays. This space has been dominated by 3 IT players and 3 Adani group players. In short, with Tata Power also in the list, it looks like renewable power was the other big theme for FY22. The year also had its share of commodity plays like Oil India Ltd and NALCO, which made the best of the commodity upcycle during the year. Now, for the losers.

We shall not enumerate the losers because the biggest losers in the Nifty 200 were the recently listed digital plays. However, since they have not completed one year, they don’t qualify in this ranking. But the pressure on digital is visible if you look at the fact that Indiamart lost more than 44% in the year, even as HDFC AMC was among the top losers, continuing with the story of pressure on the group overall.
