India’s June trade deficit widened to a record USD 25.63 billion, pushed by a rise in crude oil and coal imports while adding pressure on the rupee. On the other side, India’s merchandise exports in June rose by 16.78% to USD 37.94 billion.

Continuing the relief run for a second day, Indian domestic markets opened on Tuesday with nominal gains. At 11:20 am, the Nifty 50 was trading at the 15,992.60 level, climbing by 0.99%. On the Nifty 50 index, the top gainers were Hindalco Industries, Bajaj Finserv and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories whereas; Britannia Industries, ITC Ltd and Hero Motocorp were the top losers of the session.
Sensex was trading at a level of 53,766.38, advanced by 1.00%. The stocks trading in the green were Bajaj Finserv, Sun Pharmaceuticals and Power Grid Corporation of India. ITC Ltd, IndusInd Bank and Mahindra and Mahindra were the top draggers of the session.
The rupee depreciated to 79.04 against the US dollar in early trade. A government official said that India is trying to address volatility in the Indian rupee that has plunged to a record low against the US dollar in recent weeks amid concerns of a widening trade deficit and huge selloff by foreign investors.
