Tata Group is gearing up to construct one of India's biggest iPhone assembly plants in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, aligning with Apple Inc.'s vision to expand its manufacturing footprint in the South Asian country. The facility, anticipated to be operational in 12 to 18 months, is poised to be a game-changer for both companies.

Plant Details

The proposed factory in Hosur is set to house around 20 assembly lines, with plans to employ a workforce of 50,000 within two years. This ambitious venture not only highlights Tata's commitment to technological advancements but also aligns with Apple's broader strategy of diversifying its manufacturing operations beyond China.

This move is Apple's ongoing efforts to localize its supply chain. It also represents a deepening of the collaboration between Apple and Tata, which already manages an iPhone manufacturing unit acquired from Wistron Corp. in Karnataka. The South Indian facility is expected to play a crucial role in Apple's global supply chain.

Tata's Proactive Approach

Tata Group, known for its diverse business portfolio ranging from salt to software, has been proactive in expanding its partnership with Apple. Beyond the manufacturing aspect, Tata has accelerated hiring at its existing Hosur facility, which focuses on producing iPhone enclosures. The conglomerate is also gearing up to launch 100 retail stores dedicated to Apple products, showcasing a comprehensive approach to their collaboration.

Government Incentives and Growth Prospects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's production-linked incentives have played a pivotal role in encouraging key Apple suppliers like Foxconn Technology Group and Pegatron Corp. to ramp up their operations in India. This has resulted in a substantial increase in iPhone assembly in the country, exceeding $7 billion in the previous fiscal year and capturing approximately 7% of the global production share.

Global Scale and Future Plans

While the planned plant is expected to be mid-sized among Apple's global iPhone manufacturing facilities, it will surpass the scale of Tata's acquired Wistron plant (employing over 10,000 individuals). However, it will remain smaller than Foxconn's substantial manufacturing hubs in China, each employing hundreds of thousands. Apple and Tata have set an ambitious goal to manufacture over 50 million iPhones annually in India over the next two to three years, with plans for even more in subsequent periods.

Final Words

The collaborative effort between Tata Group and Apple in constructing this massive iPhone assembly plant not only signifies a major milestone in their partnership but also reflects the broader trend of tech giants diversifying their manufacturing operations. The strategic location, scale, and planned production volumes highlight this facility's pivotal role in Apple's global supply chain and the growing significance of India in the tech manufacturing landscape.
